Marathonisi, commonly known as Turtle Island, is a charming and ecologically significant islet located in Laganas Bay, off the southern coast of Zakynthos, Greece. This small, uninhabited island is a vital part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos and serves as a crucial nesting site for the endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta).

Shaped somewhat like a turtle, Marathonisi offers a blend of natural beauty and wildlife conservation. The island features two main beaches: a sandy shore where the turtles lay their eggs, and a pebbly beach perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The clear, turquoise waters surrounding the island provide excellent visibility for observing marine life, including the possibility of spotting the loggerhead turtles themselves.

Access to Marathonisi is typically via boat tours from nearby areas such as Laganas, Agios Sostis, and Keri. These tours often include opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the island’s coastline. The sandy beach is particularly sensitive, with designated areas marked off to protect turtle nests during the breeding season from May to October.
